Technologies at the Digital Construction Week 2019, London Excel

Dr Manuel Davila Delgado, an Associate Professor in AR and VR and Artificial Intelligence at Big DEAL, and Hadeel Sadoon, a BIM Manager at Coventry University Estate,  gave a presentation on Immersive Technologies at the Digital Construction Week 2019, London Excel. The presentation is from the Vision Network project. Vision Network is a team of experts from the academia and industry. The team conducted a study into the levels of adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in the UK’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sectors.  The Vision Network lead is Dr Delgado and the team was based at the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB) of the University of Cambridge.

At the conference, Dr Delgado and Hadeel Sadoon talked on the importance of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in the construction industry. Presently, the two technologies are widely used in areas like gaming, marketing, education and training.

Immersive technologies like AR and VR are currently playing a critical role in architecture, construction and engineering, all of which rely on visualisation for communication. Through Vision Network, the research team led by Dr Manuel Davila Delgado, investigated the application of AR and VR in enhancing performance and digitalisation for smart cities and construction purposes at citizens, portfolios, organisations and projects level. As part of the research group’s objectives, the team investigated the role AR and VR play in the design, delivery, operation and integration phases in construction. The team also explored the impact of the two technologies on different stakeholders like owners, construction professionals and end-users.
